X-files/30 Days of Night #4

(No Spoilers)

If there’s one things Steve Niles knows how to do, it’s to creep you the #@!$ out! Oh my God are there some eerie scenes in this issue!

One thing that I thought was a nice change of pace from the beginning of this issue is that we focus on the vampires for a little bit. It’s an interesting format that Niles has used in the others stories I’ve read of his because he’s taken time for us to get to know the human characters so now we get to focus on the vampires for a bit. Usually I find it more interesting when villains are shown to have more to them that just simply being evil. But in this case, Niles and Jones show that these creatures do nothing to warrant sympathy.

Dv8: Gods and Monsters #7

“Head to Wall” (No Spoilers)

Even though Dv8 is not part of World’s End, the end of the world theme seems to be prevalent here. Brian Wood and Rebekah Isaac’s take on Wildstorm group of deviants nears its conclusion as the situation escalates in this issue.

There was great build-up in this issue towards the battle that took place but ultimately I felt it was glazed over too quickly. After seeing the intense battle last issue, I just didn’t feel that this one was as epic as it should’ve been. I think part of it is because the story is starting to wrap-up and there’s still some story elements Wood obviously wants to cover so we didn’t spend much time on the battle.

Gen 13 #38

“Pocatello: Part 4: Hide and Seek” (No Spoilers)

As somber as some of the Wildstorm issues have seemed lately because of the imprint’s eminent closure, this issue was the first to warrant such a feeling. Hester is drawing his Gen 13 run to a close with some great emotional moments mixed with some epic action.

I thought Hester’s and Torian’s run began strong but then began to dwindle a little the last couple of issues. But the build-up was certainly worth the climax we’re building towards. Hester has especially taken the character of Fairchild through an emotional rollercoaster in such a short time frame. There are two scenes that really pulled at my heart-strings but I’d have to say the one between her and Burnout choked me up a little. Only longtime Wildstorm fans could appreciate the weight of their exchange.
