Wildcats #27

“Bad Medicine 1 of 4: The Broken Heart of the World” (No Spoilers)

Well, it’s no secret that I write this review within a day of hearing about the demise of the Wildstorm imprint. So needless to say, it made reading this bitter-sweet. It was a really good issue but now more than before do I really feel like I’m reading about the end of the world.

The reveal of who Aeon may seem to most that it came out of left field. But one thing about World’s End is that it definitely has catered to long-time fans. Even after hearing the villain’s true name, it was a little insert a few panels later that solidified for me who it really was. Since we already got to see many of the major Wildstorm villains appear in World’s End I had no idea who this might be. I was a little underwhelmed but I think it’s cool that Beechen took something left over from a past Wildstorm book and decided to use it here.

The Authority #26

“Genociety” (No Spoilers)

The Authority continues their space odyssey which turns into a space nightmare in this issue. Tom Taylor has taken us through some great science fiction during his run and he throws in a little science horror now.

I can tell artist Al Barrionuevo had a lot of fun designing some of the alien creatures we see in this issue. I especially like the fact that none of them are humanoid. The team has traveled so far out in space now these things should not even know what a human is (or should they?). That’s another great thing about the story that’s unfolding here is Taylor keeps piling on the mysteries (including a very interesting one with Swift) even as we get some answers.

The Authority #25

“This is Gonna Suck” (No Spoilers)

Don’t let the title of the issue fool you. It does everything BUT suck! But rest assured, Tom Taylor finds a clever way to present the title too. I personally thought it was hilarious how he did it.

After the events of the last few issues I figured things would show down a bit here and I was partially right. Taylor does take the first half to the issue to fill us in on the mystery of Jack’s secret weapon. There is also time to get genuine reactions from the other team members concerning Jack’s weapon. Each of their reactions makes perfect sense and you’re either going to feel really sorry for Jack at the end or hate him for being such a jerk. I personally felt sorry for him.

The Authority #22

“Infestation” (No Spoilers)
This is a really solid first issue by the new creative team of writer Tom Taylor and artist Mike S. Miller. As much as I hated to see the previous creative team go, I can tell already that the title is in good hands.
Taylor’s arc picks up with last issue’s cliffhanger. There’s a group of old Wildstorm enemies on The Carrier and Grifter, Flint, and Deathblow have to deal with them. I would’ve never thought this trio would work but they’ve got some great exchanges during the opening scene. Also, wait until you see how Flint takes out one of the bad guys. It’s awesome!
